Movin’ On…

…to Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs, starting tonight with Game 1 of Cavs-Celts.  Let’s take a quick look back and see what we (OK, maybe me) might have learned from Round 1:

  • Denver and Dallas are both huge disappointments.  I can’t help thinking Denver was hurt without George Karl there to sit on those knuckleheads to get them to play any defense, though you can’t discount how good (Deron Williams) and well-coached (Jerry Sloan) the Jazz are.  The Mavs?  Cuban might have to blow this team up.
  • San Antonio and Boston, despite much tread on the tires for each, had enough championship muscle memory to advance.  The Spurs beat the underachieving Mavs, while the Celts took out the under-talented Heat.  BTW, if the Heat can’t convince one of the big free agents to come to Miami, I think Wade will be off to Chicago or NY or somewhere else.
  • Impressive effort by the Thunder, especially defensively, against the Lakers, who will want no part of this team by this time next year.  Not only has Durant become a top-tier player (with LeBron, Kobe, Melo, Wade and Howard),  Russell Westbrook is the breakout player of Round 1, as he jumps up into that group of young, talented point guards around the league (Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo).
  • Hawks-Bucks, game 7 tomorrow?  Yawn.  Bucks do deserve credit for extending this series w/o both Bogut and Redd, though.
  • Out West, I like the Jazz over the Kobes in six and Suns over Spurs in seven.  I think the East is still heading toward a Cavs-Magic final as both should advance in five or six.
